Sonora Colonies
Colonia Oaxaca – Founded in 1892
The first settlers in Sonora arrived March 14, 1892. It took almost a month to traverse the rugged Sierra Madre terrain between Chihuahua and Sonora. These Sonoran settlers were primarily relocating from the mountain colonies.
Colonia Morelos – Founded in 1900
Nine thousand acres were purchased for the new colony of Morelos located 60 miles from Douglas Arizona. This colony had the benefit of two converging rivers, the Rio de Bavispe and the Rio Batepito. The area was covered in a forest of large mesquites, catclaw and sacaton.
